Many immigration authorities accept signed third-party statements from people who know the couple. This affidavit template helps a friend or family member attest, in their own words, to the genuineness of the relationship — usable as a supporting exhibit across most agencies.

When a third-party affidavit helps
Independent statements from people who know the couple add credibility that the couple cannot provide for themselves. They are accepted as supporting evidence by USCIS, UKVI, IRCC, IND, Home Affairs, and INZ, though each agency has its own preferred format (for example, Australia uses Form 888 supporting statements).
Tips for a strong affidavit
- Be specific and first-hand: dates, places, and events the affiant personally witnessed.
- Include the affiant’s contact details so the agency can verify.
- Check whether the destination agency requires notarization or a specific statutory-declaration form, and follow it.
Frequently asked questions
Does an affidavit of relationship need to be notarized?
It depends on the agency. Some accept a plain signed statement; others prefer or require notarization or a statutory declaration witnessed by an authorised person. Australia specifically uses Form 888 supporting statements (not statutory declarations under current Home Affairs guidance). Check the requirements for your destination agency and follow the stricter standard if unsure.
Who should write these affidavits?
People who personally know the couple and have observed their relationship — close friends, family members, colleagues, or clergy. First-hand, specific observations are far more persuasive than generic statements. Two to four well-written affidavits are usually more effective than many vague ones.
Can the affiant reference our chat history or photos?
An affiant should describe what they personally know and have witnessed. They can mention that they have seen the couple communicating or together at events. The couple’s own chat-history appendix and photos are separate exhibits; the affidavit adds an independent voice confirming the relationship is genuine.
